Photorejuvenation by intense pulsed light with objective measurement of skin color in Japanese patients

Several Japanese women with mild to severe photodamage were treated with IPL. Blinded photographic evaluation revealed the majority showed improvement of skin texture and pigmentation, and patients reported high satisfaction.

Study Details:

  • 25 Japanese women with mean age 50±9 years (range 31-68), Fitzpatrick Skin Types III-IV and mild (n=16), moderate (n=6)or severe (n=3) photodamage
  • 3 full-face IPL treatments 530-750 nm, PR applicator) at 3-4 weeks intervals 10 x 48-mm spot size 2.5-ms double pulses with 10-ms delay; fluence 5.5-7.0 J/cm2(1sttreatment); 5.5-7.0 J/cm2(2ndtreatment) and 6.5-8.0 J/cm2(3rd treatment)
  • Blinded photographic evaluation by 2 independent physicians, based on 5-point scale: A= 75-100%, B= 50-74%, C=25-49%, D=1-24% and E=no change
  • Spectrophotometric evaluation of skin tone

Study Results:

  • 96% of subjects showed Grade B or > (50-100%) improvement of skin texture
  • 64% of subjects showed Grade B or > (50-100%) improvement of pigmentation
  • High patient satisfaction (all patients reported satisfied to extreme satisfaction)
  • Statistically significant increase (p=0.001) in skin 'lightness' (L* value)
  • 1 case of exacerbation of very subtle epidermal melasma at 3 months
  • No blistering, hypopigmentation or skin atrophy
