Integrating Nd:YAG Laser Therapy into Clinical Practice for Onychomycosis
Author: Ioana Pescaru, MD, DermaExpert Clinic, Bucharest, Romania
Nail fungus, also known as onychomycosis, is a common infection of the nail, affecting roughly 5% of the global population. As the fungal infection goes deeper, the nail may discolor, thicken and crumble at the edge. This can be painful, cause thickened nails, and is challenging to treat, as even if treatment is successful, nail fungus often comes back.
The versatile Nordlys® platform, with its Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser, can target fungus in the nail bed and destroy it with heat.
A 46-year-old patient sought treatment at our clinic for yellow discoloration, thickening, and onycholysis of both hallux nails persisting for over a year. To address nail thickening, we prescribed a topical formulation containing clotrimazole, urea, and salicylic acid, supplemented by medical pedicures every 3 weeks to manage nail growth and thickness. Additionally, we administered 8 sessions of Nordlys Nd:YAG laser therapy every 3 weeks, primarily targeting the halluces.
